The announcement was made in advance of the CLMA ThinkLab ’07 Conference & Exhibition in Houston, Texas, where IntelliDOT will demonstrate the technology in booth # 444.
The CAREt PSC System is a wireless handheld device and specimen label printer, which links to IntelliDOT’s existing solution for point of care medication administration, and utilizes the same handheld device. The system guides the phlebotomist or nurse through the specimen collection process by scanning a patient’s barcode wristband. The patient’s name is then displayed on the handheld device as well as the name of the tests that are due, the type of collection container required, the draw order and special handling instructions.
Improperly collected lab specimens can cause significant consequences, including erroneous results that can affect decisions about patient care. False negatives or positives endanger patient safety and are costly because they result in repeat tests or unnecessary procedures. Improper specimen collection can also affect turn-around time for results, delaying patient treatment, transfers and discharges.
The CAREt PSC System includes a wireless handheld device and a specimen label printer that’s used at the bedside to ensure accurate patient identification, documentation, and specimen labeling. This eliminates the confusion and mislabeling that can occur with labels printed away from the patient’s bedside. Because the specimen collection module links with the medication system, nurses can use the same CAREt handheld device for specimen collection and medication administration.
