News: HMA Selects IntelliDOT Corporation's Handheld Bedside Scanning Technology for 55 HMA Hospitals Nationwide Aug 23, 2006
SAN DIEGO - IntelliDOT Corporation, an innovator in patient safety and workflow management solutions for healthcare, today announced that the company has signed an exclusive agreement with Health Management Associates (NYSE:HMA) to provide its handheld bedside medication administration bar code scanning technology, the CAREt(TM) System, to 55 HMA hospitals located throughout the southeast United States and Washington State over the next three years. HMA is a premier operator of acute care hospitals in non-urban communities and is one of the largest healthcare systems in the United States.
"HMA selected the CAREt System because it exceeded our stringent requirements for patient safety, ease-of-use for caregivers and integration with existing health data systems," said Larry Smith, vice president of pharmacy for HMA. "By implementing the CAREt System in our hospitals, we underscore our ongoing commitment to assure the well-being of healthcare consumers in the communities we serve. The CAREt System empowers our caregivers and builds trust that the healthcare we provide is the best available in North America."
The CAREt System is the first nurse-centered workflow manager to connect caregivers with the information systems they need at the point of care. Built on a design that complements the way nurses work, the CAREt System provides a straightforward user interface that supports a comprehensive approach to medication safety and documentation at bedside, in a variety of healthcare settings . "IntelliDOT has proven to be an excellent technology partner," said Jim Jordan, senior vice president and chief information officer for HMA. "Their unique software application integrated seamlessly with our existing systems, and the custom-designed hardware was easily adopted by nursing. These two factors are critical to a successful technology implementation."
The integrated hardware and software solution provided by IntelliDOT results in a cost-effective "smart hardware" system for hospitals looking for a customized design for caregivers at the bedside. By simply scanning a patient wristband, the CAREt Handheld guides the nurse through all required medication administration and documentation tasks that have accumulated for a patient. Information is clear, organized and delivered right into the caregiver's hand, right when it's needed.
In the just-issued report from the Institute of Medicine (IOM), "Preventing Medication Errors: Quality Chasm Series, "researchers found that medication errors lead to more than 1.5 million preventable injuries each year. One of the IOM's recommendations for the prevention of medication errors is the use of bar-coding technology at the point of care. By offering the CAREt System to all of its hospitals, HMA demonstrates its commitment to harnessing the benefits of the latest healthcare technology to protect patients, support caregivers and enhance the overall quality of care.
"Eliminating medication errors is a critical challenge in healthcare," said Dave Swenson, R.Ph., chief operating officer of IntelliDOT Corporation. "The user-friendly CAREt System has proven to eradicate bedside medication errors, improve the quality of care, protect the nursing staff and improve bottom-line financial results for hospitals. We are very pleased that HMA has chosen to make the CAREt System available to all of its hospitals and we are eager to bring the benefits of our system to its caregivers and patients."
